Introduction to Gas Metal Arc Welding
in Metal Fabrication & WeldingAbout this course
This course provides learners with the essential knowledge and practical understanding required to perform routine Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), also known as MIG welding. Ideal for beginners and entry-level workshop operators, this course explores how to safely set up and operate GMAW equipment, identify weld types from drawings, and carry out basic welding tasks using standard materials like mild steel. Learners will develop confidence in preparing and welding materials to standard job specifications while maintaining compliance with Work Health and Safety (WHS) practices and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
What You Will Learn:
• Understand the basic principles and applications of GMAW (MIG) welding
• Identify job requirements and interpret weld symbols from technical drawings
• Select and use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and follow WHS guidelines
• Set up GMAW equipment, including power source, wire feeder, and shielding gas
• Clean and prepare materials using jigs, fixtures, and edge preparation techniques
• Perform routine butt and fillet welds on low carbon and mild steel materials
• Inspect and clean finished welds according to workshop procedures
